MáchaFAMOUS FIGURES

Hradsko – an inaccessible castle providing natural protection for its inhabitants on a platform on a rocky promontory, separated from the surrounding country by chasms and the canyon of the Pšovka stream. Research in this area was targeted at finding archaeological evidence of the period and type of settlement, and at confirming or refuting the opinion that Hradsko could be identified with the fortress of Canburg – a Slavonic settlement, whose location is still disputed.

Klemperka, some 200 m distance from the village of Truskavna as the crow flies, is an artificial cave, hewn by the hand of man and of remarkable dimensions. In 1979, researchers found a shard of a vessel made on a potter’s wheel.  Archaeologists classified it as an example of medieval pottery dating from the 12th – 13th century, or the later period of the fortress.

The radiant beauty of the landscape has always attracted a number of important figures. Not only in literary circles was it dubbed Mácha’s region. Also the almost-forgotten names of Dubá and Mšeno Switzerland reflect how long ago the region's beauty was discovered. We should also remember and pay homage to Eduard Štorch, Václav Levý, August Sedláček and Jára Cimrman.

LhotkaFOLK ARCHITECTURE

The romantic scenery as well as the tourist and recreational attractions of the Kokořín region are enhanced by an abundant heritage of folk architecture, such as wooden and timbered houses with porches and decorative gables. Human settlements have developed from those hewn in the rock towards extensions stuck to rock walls and independent houses which have not departed far from the protective rock faces. Every step you take in the quiet Kokořín region, you will be accompanied by these truly characteristic buildings. Many will certainly recall Lhotka, Rozbořenka or Nedamy, settlements of old.

OsinaliceHISTORICAL PHOTOGRAPHS

Since time immemorial, farmsteads have comprised large complexes of buildings accommodating all the needs of human life. Unfortunately, even their mighty beams, which have stood the test of decades, are not eternal and indestructible. Where their ancient magic has not been preserved, we can still feel it in immortalised photographs.
